Jessica Machado is an award-winning author, journalist and professor. She is currently an editor at The Guardian, leading coverage of the fight for civil rights, and an adjunct professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Previously, she was a staff editor at NBC News, Vox and Rolling Stone. Her reporting has appeared in The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, Elle, and The Cut, among others.

Born and raised on O‘ahu and Kanaka Maoli, she holds BAs in journalism and sociology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and an MFA in creative nonfiction writing from Portland State University. In 2024, she won a Honolulu Book Award for her memoir, Local (Little A). She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
